History

TANM Profile and History

TANM was founded by New Mexico’s destination marketing organizations (DMO) and incorporated and received its 501(c)(6) tax exempt status in 1987.  The first executive director was hired in the early 1990s on a contract and focused on membership development and creating awareness of TANM.  The second executive director came on board in the mid 90s and left the position in the last quarter of 2001.  Over the years, TANM’s work plans and programs have changed and evolved through changes in volunteer leadership.

Original Mission Statement

(from Articles of Incorporation)

The Tourism Association of New Mexico is formed for the following purposes:

  1. To encourage the further development and growth in value of convention and tourist business for the State of New Mexico.
  2. To explore, encourage and develop cooperative marketing opportunities between different regions and communities within the state.
  3. To coordinate information sharing and education activities designed to assist visitor development agencies in their own planning, organization, servicing and marketing processes.
  4. To promote a unified approach to support efforts, provide input and enhance the success of the New Mexico Division of Tourism.
  5. To influence state legislation in a manner that will ensure that state policies and spending are adequate and appropriate to support the growth of visitor business and resulting economic development.

Organizational Structure

TANM is governed by a 39 member board of directors.  Fourteen positions represent destination marketing organizations such as chambers of commerce and convention and visitors bureaus.  Fourteen positions are industry related and the remaining 11 positions are for tourism related programs and tourism related associations.  The cabinet secretary of the NM Tourism Department is an ex-oficio board member.

Work is accomplished through committees as provided for in the bylaws.  Currently, the committees include: membership, fund raising, education, government affairs, and public relations.  There are ad hoc committees to assist with the Governor’s Conference and the Hall of Fame.

Staff currently consists of the executive director and an executive assistant.
